All my adventures and photos of Salt River Canyon in Eastern Arizona.

Salt River Canyon is relatively remote, but so beautiful that it would be worth traveling to see even if it weren't the starting point for Upper Salt River rafting trips.

My new friend wanted to go whitewater rafting. Well, me, too!

For a guy who loves whitewater rafting, I sure haven't done much of it in the past few years. But I did get to go yesterday, on the Upper Salt River, and worked in a little camping with a new friend to boot.

Frank returns for another rafting trip.

It's been a year since my friend Frank and I went whitewater rafting on the Upper Salt River. It was his first time, and apparently established a tradition, as he called me a few weeks ago to arrange for a second trip. That's okay with me; the Upper Salt is awesome and I am always up for a bit of river time.

In which I introduce my grandson to the joys of whitewater rafting.

My grandson, Zachary, has been hearing me tell river tales all his life. That's because what happens on the river, seldom stays on the river—it's too interesting not to share! Allow me to show off my new river shoes.

With all the rafting and river floats and waterfall jumps I do, you'd think I'd have a decent pair of river shoes. Well, I do now!

I head up to Salt River Canyon for an overnight rafting trip and realize my rafting buddy won't be there.

So, two days ago, we realized that Frank didn't have a reservation. And Wilderness Aware had already filled that trip. In fact, since tomorrow is the last day of the season, they had filled all their trips and assigned every available river guide.

How I spent two days camping and rafting on the Upper Salt River.

"Here" was Wilderness Aware's compound on the Upper Salt River. The gathering was to precede a 2-day expedition into the Arizona wilderness, far from any roads, aboard rafts floating down the Salt. The compound is just off US 60, on the north side of the Salt River Canyon Bridge, on a bluff overlooking the river itself.

A visit to Arizona's beautiful Salt River Canyon.

On our way to the Snowflake/Show Low/Petrified Forest area from Phoenix, we often travel along US 60 through the Salt River Canyon. This exquisite spot, located at the border between the Fort Apache and San Carlos Indian Reservations, is used as a jewelry mall on weekends by locals, and a picnic spot by locals as well as by passers-through.
