Monument Valley

Monument Valley is an exquisite example of erosion gone fabulous. Made famous by film director John Ford, most everyone in the world knows the images of Monument Valley, even if they don't know where the came from.

Strictly speaking, Monument Valley isn't in Arizona. Or, rather, it isn't all in Arizona. It belongs to the Navajo people and is on one of their reservations, which straddles all four states in the Four Corners region.

Michael and I take his sister, Surya, to Monument Valley.

Each year for several years, Michael and I have celebrated his sister, Surya's, birthday by taking her sightseeing to one of Arizona's most special places. We've been to Sedona and driven the Apache Trail, to name two. This year, Surya chose to go to Monument Valley, a place she said she'd always wanted to visit and had pretty much given up on ever actually seeing. Today, we went.

A visit to that jewel of the West, Monument Valley.

Michael moved in with me in March of 1997. However, one of the things we discovered we had in common was the desire to move to Arizona. Having realized we both wanted to do that, there seemed no reason to wait. And so, in June of that year, we flew to Phoenix, rented a car, and made a circuit of the state for the purpose of looking for exactly where, in Arizona, we wanted to live. That journey took us to the Northeastern, "Four Corners" part of the state which includes the Navajo Tribal Park Monument Valley.
