Jason and I go on a snorkeling adventure and to a luau in Maui.

We had saved today for the most blatantly touristy stuff one can do on Maui, besides shopping for T-shirts: A snorkeling trip, and a luau.

Dying Slowly

There's no point in living if you don't live.

Thanks to the Internet, a poem attributed to Chilean poet and Nobel Laureat Pablo Neruda called Dying Slowly went viral in 2000, nearly 30 years after his death. However, Magdalena Edwards, a Brazilian writer, claimed authorship of the verses, providing evidence that the poem closely resembled her work in Portuguese titled A Morte Devagar (To Death Slowly), which was published in 2000. However, no matter who wrote it (Edwards!), it is a moving reminder to embrace life fully, break free from routine, and savor every moment.

A park 25 million years in the making.

South Mountain Park is more than just a recreational area; it's a significant preservation of desert wilderness in the heart of Phoenix, providing an essential refuge for both wildlife and people. And today I went car-hiking through part of it. (Car-hiking, it's a thing right? I mean, if you can car-camp, why not car-hike?)

Welcome to CilwaWeb!

How and why this site and code library was developed.

The year was 1997. The number one song that year was Something About The Way You Look Tonight and the top-grossing movie was Titanic. Bill Clinton was President. The worst the Republicans could find on him was he lied about having sex with a consenting partner, probably because they were mad at him for balancing the budget—something no Republican President had ever accomplished. I had just moved to Snowflake, Arizona, with my then-husband Michael and "web sites" were the latest thing. Many companies had them; and as every Windows computer already had Internet Explorer on it, so as soon as it was connected to the Internet, all those pages were accessible, along with email (which, years earlier, I had helped develop) and newsgroups (an early form of social media, taking the form of a bulletin board). And, as a computer professional and the author of four Windows programming books, it seemed like my creating a web site of my own was a logical step to take.

Free (and ad-free!) simple drop-and-convert app to make JPG copies of almost any visual format.

This is a barebones, simple app for copying an image file from other formats (like PNG, GIF, BMP, and the new one, WEBP) into basic JPG format. It does not touch the original file. It's a simple drag-and-drop operation that can speed things up if you have an image that's perfect, except for being in the wrong format.

Disinformation only works with those too lazy (or scared) to find out the truth.

Folks, gather 'round the campfire—I've got a yarn to spin about the peculiar ways of U.S. elections. Now, I ain't no fancy politician or constitutional scholar, but I reckon this tale's worth tellin'.

All about my very first multi-state trip — without parents!

In mid-September, 1969, in accordance with the plan we'd made during my visit to him, my friend Chris and I carefully saved our money until, in September, 1969, we were ready to make the journey of a lifetime (so far!): From Florida all the way up to Vermont (where I had lived as a kid) and back again.

Getting back home is the best part of any trip.

I awakened to the smell of eggs being scrambled. (It's the butter!) Chris had awakened ahead of me and started in on breakfast.

Climbing up a fire tower for the view, and late deja vu.

North Carolina's Coastal Plains, which make up 45% of the state, took up about 85% of today's travels. But the Coastal Plains actually look so much like Florida that I wasn't motivated to take any photos. I was probably too tired, as well. But that didn't stop me from, on a whim, pulling into the parking lot of a North Carolina Division of Forest Resources fire tower.

And the heavens opened up, and we nearly drowned.

It takes about 6 hours to get to Luray, Virginia, from Darien, Connecticut, and we left early so we would be able to get there while the caverns were still open—and, if not, we could tour them first thing in the morning, as long as we could find a nearby place to camp. Preferably, for free.
